    Reaching the community through music

    Day 150

    Talents for Change

Nakivale settlement is filled with people of special talents. Barious Babu Abdul is one of those people. He’s a musician and a composer, a teacher and a Rotarian. On Day 150, Barious used his talents to create a message of change in Nakivale.

Barious lives in Nakivale. He is a songwriter – he writes, performs and records his music to share with others (right now, he needs to leave the settlement to record, but he’s hoping to start a studio here in Nakivale). We asked him if – for Day 150 – he would write a song to make change in his community. And he agreed straight away.

Barious sat down with ARC’s Protection team, Mathilde, Sonia and others, to talk about one of the challenges his own community was struggling with – violence against women and children. And then he set out writing his song.

“Everyone has the right to live free of violence,” Barious told us as he showed us his song lyrics. He included references to the different nationalities in the settlement. “I want everyone in Nakivale to hear themselves in this song.”

With his song written, Barious needed to head to the studio to record it. With a recording it could be shared more widely around Nakivale and beyond – like by ARC’s Community Activists with their new speakers. We helped him get transport to a recording studio – Alpha Music – in Mbarara, a nearby city.

Barious worked with producer Bruno through the night and the next day to get the song just right.

So , without further ado, here’s Barious’s newest song Say No To Violence.

This change made possible by Cresa.
