A letter from Alight Sudan's Executive Director

April 15th, 2025, marks two years since violence plunged Sudan into a devastating civil war. It is estimated that 30.4 million people, or 64% of Sudan's population, will require humanitarian assistance in the coming year. On this anniversary, Alight Sudan's Executive Director reflects on the impact of Alight's frontline staff in Sudan.

Dear Alight Community,

Two years into the conflict in Sudan, our hearts remain with every person who has endured unthinkable loss, disruption, and uncertainty. This crisis has shaken the foundations of everyday life, and yet, even in the harshest conditions, we continue to witness the unyielding resilience of the Sudanese people.

At Alight Sudan, we have walked alongside our community for over two decades. Through displacement and scarcity, peace and conflict, we have remained rooted in co-creation—adapting, listening, and standing with people through every chapter. What has guided us throughout is a steadfast belief in the strength and potential of those we serve.

In the face of this latest crisis, we’ve adapted, shifted, and grown. Together with our customers, our staff, our partners, and our supporters, we’ve chosen to do the doable and keep going, reaching nearly 4 million people with human-worthy and lifesaving services since the outbreak of conflict.

Even when war has upended lives, abundance still finds a way. We see it in the determination of our frontline workers, who have helped expand healthcare access and immunization coverage amid total system collapse. We see it when community members step up to sustain solutions with belief in a brighter future. And we see it when local actors, global partners, and everyday citizens come together—not out of obligation, but out of shared humanity.

The quotes and impact numbers below are a glimpse of what’s possible when communities lead and support endures. They are a testament to the strength that emerges when we show up—together—even in the most difficult moments.

The crisis in Sudan is far from over. Millions remain displaced. Needs remain vast – and so does the urgency. Now more than ever, we need your continued support, your advocacy, and your voice. Sudan must not be forgotten.

As we head into the third year of war, we are more determined than ever to stand with the people of Sudan and work together to make a lasting impact. To every member of the Alight community– thank you. You are part of this story. Let’s keep showing up, Let’s keep choosing connection over despair and action over silence. Together, we remain resilient.

With deep gratitude,

Mohammed Idriss

"We thank Alight for maintaining refrigerators powered by solar systems in various locations across the state and for engaging the community to protect them. This has enabled communities to continue accessing critical immunization services in areas where other systems are non-functional."
