Challenge

Following the most severe drought in over four decades, the Somali Peninsula is grappling with the plight of 4 million internally displaced people. With a population heavily dependent on farming and herding, the country is confronting dire hunger. Compounded by health issues such as high infant-mortality rates and limited access to clean water and sanitation, Somalia struggles with basic healthcare needs. Furthermore, decades of civil war have disrupted education and employment opportunities, exacerbating poverty, instability, and gender-based violence.

Response
  • 988,257 people received free, quality health and nutrition services
  • 208,618 people gained access to safe water, improved sanitation, and hygiene promotion services
  • 127,402 people received gender-based violence prevention and care
  • 18,200 school children benefited from education services that included meals, clean water, and sanitation services
  • 2,500+ received vocational education and training
Revitalizing Somalia's fishing industry and job market

As Somalia continues to rebuild after 1990s civil war, Alight is revitalizing the vital fishing industry and creating new jobs along the entire supply chain for returning families. In collaboration with the Somali Stability Fund and the Jubaland Ministry of Fishery and Marine Resources, we deployed a fleet of mobile, solar-powered fish kiosks throughout Kismayo.

Mobilizing a Love Army for Somalia

After famine was declared in Somalia in 2017, social media creator Jerome Jarre and a group of influencers launched a campaign called #LoveArmyforSomalia to mobilize their followers. They gave them a way to help. And within 72 hours, they raised nearly $3 million for people in Somalia. A movement was born.
