Challenge

Over the past year (February 2023 to February 2024), Alight’s affiliate Questscope has been dedicated to supporting the mental health and well-being of young people in Jordan, addressing the significant challenges faced by this vulnerable population. These challenges include trauma, lack of access to mental health services, and the need for social-emotional learning (SEL) to foster resilience and recovery. Additionally, systemic issues such as resource constraints and the need for policy reforms within Jordanian ministries present ongoing hurdles.

Approach

Questscope's comprehensive approach involved close collaboration with Jordanian government ministries, international organizations, and local communities to integrate Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services (MHPSS) into all activities. Key initiatives included:

  1. Program integration: Embedding MHPSS principles in all programs to ensure a holistic approach to youth well-being.
  1. Proposal writing: Emphasizing MHPSS in funding proposals to secure resources for multi-faceted support systems.
  1. Awareness raising: Organizing workshops and disseminating information to reduce stigma and foster understanding of mental health challenges.
  1. Partnerships with ministries:
  • Ministry of Development (MOD): Launching aftercare programs for young offenders, staff training, and developing case management tools.
  • Ministry of Education (MOE): Training educators in SEL strategies, adapting assessment tools, and creating resources for child protection.
  1. Staff well-being: Implementing self-care retreats and support groups for staff.
  1. Advocacy and youth engagement: Partnering with organizations to promote juvenile rights, child-friendly procedures, and holistic support for young offenders.
  1. Zaatari Youth Center: Offering non-specialized mental health services and leadership development through expressive arts, music education, photography, gender equality education, film production, and professional music recording.
  1. Barefoot Psychology: Training youth facilitators to enhance self-care skills and resilience through trauma and neuroscience education.
